Brian Mathebula joined GSCC in 2016. He is originally from South Africa, Gauteng specifically. He represented various provincial teams at youth levels in Gauteng during his high school years. In 2002 he also made the South Africa Under/17 team. He made his first-class debut against Boland as an 18 year old in 2004. He subsequently went to represent the Highveld Lions, Gauteng Strikers and Easterns at domestic level. In 2007, he was selected to the South African National Academy based at the High-Performance Centre in Pretoria. Amongst his first-class dismissals, he counts batsman such as Daryl Cullinan, Dean Elgar, JP Duminy, Johan Botha and Themba Bavuma
Brian’s cricket began in Alexandra Township in 1995. He was awarded a cricket scholarship to attend the prestigious Jeppe High School for Boys in 1999. It was here where his talent flourished under the guidance of seasoned professionals like Cyril Mitchley and Mark Johnston. Upon completion of high school, Brian received a scholarship to study and represent the University of Johannesburg Cricket Club, which won the national cricket club championship for three consecutive years from 2006-2008. Brian stopped playing first-class cricket in 2011, and from 2013-2015 he captained the Alexandra Cricket Club playing in the Gauteng Premier League.
Maybe the best right-arm quick bowler in Germany, Brian could influence the ball to walk and talk like nobody else can. An unstable, energizing virtuoso who could change the shape of any match with the ball whenever needed and under any condition.
Because of his heroics, Golden Star Cricket was crowned champions of T20 German league in NRW region. He can swing the bat as well, and most opposition ballers can verify that. He is one the best all-rounders on the German circuit. He was selected as sports director of Golden Star Cricket club for this year as well. He is also encouraging youth cricket and spending time with kids on the ground as well. His move to Germany was motivated by his passion to further his studies and in 2017, he completed his MA in Analysis and Design of Social Protection System. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD at the Hochschule Bonn Rhein Sieg and Maastricht University (Netherlands). In South Africa, he is considered as just a bowler, but at GSCC he has contributed significantly with the bat as well to an extent that he is considered a genuine all-rounder in the team. As he puts it in relation to his batting “See ball, hit the ball”. He also notes that it has been a great pleasure to experience a different cricketing culture and proud to have been part of the team that won the first T20 championship with GSCC in 2017. In 2018, Brian will form part of the executive committee at the club as the sporting director working with the youth.
